Summary of Recent Changes in Tariffs
Janel provides the summary below as a convenient reference for the recent tariff changes. We understand and appreciate that there has been a lot of activity in a short period of time, and we provide the following to give a holistic view of these changes.
Reciprocal Tariffs
On or after April 5th, a 10% tariff on imports will be implemented.
On or after April 5th, a country-specific tariff will be implemented in lieu of the 10% tariff implemented on April 5th. If a country is not listed in Annex I of the Federal Register Notice, then a tariff of 10% applies.
Pharma, Lumber, Furniture, Paper, Chips, Books, and Section 232 Goods will be spared the Reciprocal Tariff. For exact information regarding these exemptions, please refer to Annex II in the Federal Register Notice.

Automobile and Automobile Parts
On or after April 3rd, a tariff of 25% on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks will be implemented.
Beginning May 3rd, a tariff of 25% on imports of certain automobile parts will be implemented under various subheadings of chapters 40, 70, 73, 83, 84, 85, 87, 90, and 94. USMCA will be eligible for preferential duty treatment.

Oil from Venezuela
An additional 25% tariff will be imposed on any country importing oil or oil derivative products from Venezuela, whether directly or indirectly through third parties. The Executive Order was signed on March 24th, 2025. This was not implemented on April 2nd, and it is unclear when this will be implemented. We are currently waiting on the Federal Register Notice. Steel (and Steel Derivatives – articles made from Steel not classified in chapters 72 and 73)
A 25% tariff will be implemented starting March 12th
Federal Register Notice (FRN) Released March 5th (this is the official government notice empowering CBP to implement this change).
Annex in the FRN outlines specific HTS codes impacted Federal Register :: Adjusting Imports of Steel Into the United States
For derivative materials, you must report the amount in kg of the derivative content separately. If it is zero, then you must report zero and use the country of shipment as the country of origin. The derivative content should be reported on its own entry line, not the parent-child combination.
Aluminum (and Aluminum Derivatives – articles made from Aluminum not classified in chapter 76)
A 25% tariff will be implemented starting March 12th

China
An additional 20% as of March 7th under IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act)
This is in addition to the Section 301 tariffs (25%, 15%, or 7.5% [in some special cases, up to 50% or 100% for semiconductors and electric vehicles]), originally enacted in 2018.
Mexico
A 25% tariff as of March 4th, (USMCA articles are exempted), this is under IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act),
As of March 6th, there is an additional 10% tariff on potash (potassium materials - 2815.20.0050, 2815.20.0090, 3104.20.0010, 3104.20.0050, 3104.30.0000, 3104.90.0100, 3105.10.0000, 3105.20.0000, 3105.60.0000).
Canada
A 25% tariff as of March 4th, (USMCA articles are exempted), this is under IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act),
For energy products, the increase is 10% as of March 6th
As of March 6th, there is an additional 10% tariff on potash (potassium materials - 2815.20.0050, 2815.20.0090, 3104.20.0010, 3104.20.0050, 3104.30.0000, 3104.90.0100, 3105.10.0000, 3105.20.0000, 3105.60.0000).
